MIGRATING WITH Final Cut Pro

Here you shall find the workflow for tape migration performed at the HKG FCP Digitization Workstation.

Accessioning and Physical Inspection

Accessioning and physical inspection procedures are almost identical to the ones for videotapes destined for the SAMMA Solo machine. The fork in the procedural workflow comes in regards to the introduction of an online spreadsheet document yearning for the input of metadata during the accessioning process. Also, the carrier notes field needs a note: Tape to be migrated with FCP.

Retrieve Items

  • Go to shelf
  • Locate item(s)
  • Insert placeholder card to mark removal of item(s)
    • Include enough info to ID tape(s), date and initial
  • Bring item(s) to MAVIS Cataloging Workstation

Accession item(s)1)

Loan out item(s) to digitizer

Input metadata into Kingdom of Magic online spreadsheet (use samma_prep csv fields)

  • Notes for Digitizer
  • Status
    • on loan ([loan number]) to [mavis username]
  • HKG ID (tapeid)
  • Description (description)
  • Location (location)
  • Medium
    • Video Tape
  • Format (tape_format)
  • Component Number
  • Carrier Number
  • Collection Number
  • PRES File Name (output_filename)
    • Append proper file extension (ie. _pres_1.mov)
  • INT File Name (output_filename)
    • Append proper file extension (ie. _int_1.mov)
  • ACC File Name (output_filename)
    • Append proper file extension (ie. _acc_1.mp4)

Physically inspect tape

Give tape to Digitizer

At this stage the digitizer will begin the actual migration process.

Actual Migration Process

Included in the proceeding (under construction) guide are instructions on how to migrate the tape(s), what metadata to stick into the online spreadsheet document, quality control, backup procedures, and tape revaulting. Also included, intermediate and access level file creation, backup, and metadata input instructions. Next stage: XML import!

XML Import

  • Confirm storage of preservation files on ODB30
  • Import preservation metadata into MAVIS using (non-existent) hkg_fcp_migration_pres stylesheet
  • Change imported sections of online spreadsheet to green
  • Input copied from info into online spreadsheet for INT and ACC files
  • Confirm storage of intermediate and access files on ODB30
  • Import intermediate/access metadata into MAVIS using (non-existent) hkg_fcp_migration_int_acc stylesheet
  • Change imported sections of online spreadsheet to green
  • Copy access files onto cataloger workstation (this can be done as soon as access files are created)

Conclusion

Okay, now perhaps everything is done. The tape/box is back in the vault (and the loan closed). The digital files are backed up on the ODB30 and pointed to MAVIS. And the cataloger has digital files to watch for title creation purposes. Congratulations. Move on to the next stage of workflow.

THINGS THAT NEED TO BE DONE

  • create stylesheets for PRES IMPORT and INT/ACC IMPORT.
  • look into changing SAMMA database to mark that a tape has been migrated even though it does not have a SAMMA migration record
1)
If a tape is already accessioned, no need for re-accession. However, make sure there is a note in the carrier note marking the tape for FCP digitization. A .csv file should be in the IMPORT-EXPORT\MAVISexportforSAMMAPrep\imported folder. If not, you need to run this export off the component record in MAVIS, and import into SAMMA Prep.
2)
This manual exists in the physical sphere.
